J&K climbers excel in National Sport Climbing C’ship

JAMMU, Dec 14: J&K climbers performed well in the National Sport Climbing Championship held at Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, recently. Mrityunjay Sharma won a bronze medal in the sub junior boys category, Shivani Charak in the junior girls category, Shilpa Charak in speed climbing in the girls category and Hardev Singh in Lead climbing in the boys category.
Earlier in the semi finals, Mrityunjay Sharma had topped the 50ft high climbing wall along with 5 climbers from other zones to qualify for the final round wherein he finished 3rd in one of the toughest competitions of the championship.
He received a cash prize of Rs. 5000 along with a medal and a gift hamper. Similarly, Shivani Charak and Shilpa had entered the final round in their respective categories by giving creditable performances.
However, both the climbers could not repeat their exellence in the final round and finished 5th and 6th respectively.
The championship was organized by Indian Mountaineering Foundation East Zone Committee, Kolkata under the aegies of Indian Mountaineering Foundation, New Delhi.
Shawetica Khajuria, general secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K and a National Judge in Sport Climbing and Anil Kumar were the manager and coach respectively of the state team.
The team was sponsored by the J&K State Sports Council.
On its arrival from Kolkata the team was accorded a warm welcome by office bearers and members of Mountaineering Association of J&K and a large number of sport climbers.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included secretary of the Association Ram Khajuria, vice president Yogeshwar Kumar, treasurer Shawetica Khajuria, Rakesh Goswami and Navneet Gupta.
