JAMMU, Jan 2: J&K Fencers brought laurels by winning one gold and two bronze medals in the ongoing 31st National Junior Fencing Championship (U-20) held at Raipur, Chhattisgarh today.
Ace fencer Shreya Gupta won gold medal in Sabre individual event in the junior girl’s competition while in the boys two bronze medals were won in Epee and Sabre events.
Ajay Kumar, Sufiyan Sohil Waheed, Yuvraj Singh and Saaid -ur- Rehman won Bronze medal in (Epee Boys) while Vatsal Gandotra, Harshit Kohli, Suryansh Sharma and Amish Sharma won Bronze medal in (Sabre Boys) event in the competition.
As per statement, overcoming stiff competition from her opponents, Shreya Gupta achieved the distinction of winning her third junior national title. In the medal bout, Shreya defeated Nitika of Haryana convincingly by score of 15-9 whereas in semi-finals, she defeated Akhiri of Haryana by 15-13 in a nail-biting finish. The final between Shreya and Ritu of Gujarat was a one-sided affair which was won by Shreya with a score of 15-3.
Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council has also appreciated the remarkable achievement by J&K Fencers at the national level. Secretary J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gull commented, “Those who brought medals in the Championship are deserve to be congratulated and hope that these will act as messengers to ripple the J&K Sports Council aim and objective of sports in J&K-UT to encouraged others to perform best in ongoing Championship.”
