JAMMU, July 1: As the Chess players from Jammu and Kashmir could not clinch medals, but they put up a spectacular show during Commonwealth Chess Championship, which concluded recently at New Delhi.
Thirteen players from Jammu and Kashmir namely Vilakshan Mehta, Kavish Gupta, Aditya Mahajan, Sumit Grover, Pranav Sharma, Ritwik Nanda, Meenal Gupta, Arushi Kotwal, Anshul Mahajan, Dewang Gupta, Soham Kamotra, Soham Gupta and Kanav Gupta participated in the Championship under different categories.
Three J&K players Meenal Gupta (U-14 Girls), Soham Kamotra (U-12 Boys) and Arushi Kotwal (U-12 Girls) missed the medals by just one point. The trio had a chance to win the Bronze medals in their respective categories but could not make way.
Apart from them, in senior category Sumit Grover also played well. Dewang Gupta took part in U-10 Boys, Ritwik Nanda and Soham Gupta in U-12 Boys, Vilakshan Mehta and Kavish Gupta in U-14 boys, Kanav Gupta in U-16 Boys and Aditya Mahajan, Pranav Sharma and Anshul in open category, wherein they also displayed marvelous skills.
In the championship, 560 players from 12 countries including 30 players from Pakistan participated.
The tournament was conducted as per FIDE Laws of Chess and FIDE Swiss System with 10 rounds.
Atul Kumar Gupta, Joint Secretary, All India Chess Federation and President, All J&K Chess Association said, “The performance of J&K players at this level is highly commendable. The days are not so far when State players will win medals at National and even at International Levels.
