JAMMU, Dec 16: JK Randonneurs–a renowned cycling club of J&K took out a cycle rally here involving women riders and children.
The participants rode together with the country wide similar rides being organized in many cities by NGO JWALA. The ride has been named ‘DISHA’ in all cities and is a non commercial effort to ride in solidarity for women’s safety.
In commemoration of the Nirbhaya case, where a 23 year old university student was raped and brutally harassed in Delhi on Dec 16, 2011, an NGO called JWALA was formed by Dr Divya Gupta. The basic aim of the NGO is “Empowering Women/Girls through Self Defence Training”. Since then, JWALA has trained more than 1 lakh women and girls in self defence all over the country. To commemorate the event, JWALA has planned a cycling ride “DISHA” throughout the country.
The aim of the ride “DISHA” is to create awareness about the women’s safety and self defence which is the need of the hour.
The riders rode through many residential colonies of the city. Riders has taken a pledge “I am the defender” at the culmination of the rally.
Patrons of the Club told that this was an effort to imbibe valuable education to the younger generation and children and such kind of rides will be organized in future also for spreading positive message in the society.
