JAMMU, Nov 23: Host J&K created history by winning the prestigious Champions’ Trophy of the 1st Sub Junior North Zone Sport Climbing Championship held at Sprawling Buds School, Chinore, here. In a neck to neck fight with Punjab and Haryana the host team won 13 points against 6 and 5 points secured by Punjab and Haryana respectively. Haryana climbers, however, swept the medals tally in the mini group claiming 10 points against 1 each by J&K and Delhi and won the Mini Champions’ Trophy. Uttar Pradesh and Chandigarh, the other participating teams, could not bag any medal. Whereas Shivpreet Pannu of Punjab, the national champion, gave Punjab a head start by winning both the Gold medals in lead and speed climbing in the Sub Junior Girls category and gave Punjab 6 points, the J&K climbers Shivani and Shilpa performed well to clinch both the silver and bronze medals in Lead and Speed climbing and collected 6 points for J&K. In the Sub Junior Boys category, Govind, a national bronze medalist, and Sahil Kumar, both of Haryana, won gold and bronze medals respectively in lead climbing and claimed 4 points. Mrityunjay Sharma of J&K secured silver medal to increase J&K’s points tally to 8. On third and last day of the competition, the darling of the crowd, however, turned out to be Mrityunjay Sharma of J&K who climbed the 40ft high fibre glass wall at neck breaking speed in 9.86 seconds to win Gold medal in speed climbing and clinch the Champions’ trophy for J&K. Aman Dogra , another good climber of J&K further increased J&K’ medal tally by securing a silver medal by climbing the wall in 12 seconds. The bronze medal went to Prem Kumar of Haryana who climbed the wall in 14.64. However, Haryana came back strongly in the Mini category to win 2 gold and 2 silver medals and claim the Mini Champions’ Trophy. Whereas Veena Rawat and Komal Rawat, both of Haryana bagged the gold and silver medal in the Mini Girls category, Prem Kumar and Sahil Kumar of Haryana secured the first two positions in the Mini Boys Category. The bronze medals in this category went to Rashi Sachdeva of Delhi and Ajaydeep Singh of J&K. In all about 200 climbers from various North Zone states participated in the 3-day championship organized by Mountaineering Association of J&K under the auspices of Indian Mountaineering Association North Zone Committee and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council. B.R Sharma, Principal Secretary Planning and Development, J&K was the chief guest on the concluding day who gave away cash prizes amounting to Rs.30500 to the winners and Mementoes to the participating States and institutions.
