JAMMU, July 27: The Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) authorities launched clearance and restoration work in many city areas where flood in lanes and drains caused devastation.
An official spokesman said that on the directions of Commissioner, Mandeep Kaur, the JMC teams under the supervision of Joint Commissioner R S Jamwal, constituted quick reaction teams headed by the three Transport officers namely Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, Prem Raj and Balbir Singh. Chief Transport Officer Talat Mehmood Khan was monitoring the work.
The men and machinery were dispatched to various locations. The quick reaction teams cleared many blockades in various nallahs.
The JMC spokesman claimed that Corp has de-silted all the nullahs well before the onset of monsoon season and has removed more than one lakh tons of garbage from these nullahs but due to sudden heavy rains water level in nullahs increased tremendously resulting in overflow at some places.
During the operation JMC used three heavy excavator machines, 6 dewatering pumps, 10 JCBs, 20 tippers along with 200 nullah gang labours were engaged to meet the challenge.
JMC has made every attempt to de-silt the nullahs up to bed level and has been successful in desilting process but at few places where encroachments on nullahs were made, it was not possible to clear the bottle necks as there were no proper access as for deployment of heavy machinery at these points. The encroachment on the side of nullahs/ deep drains is proving major problem for the JMC staff to clear the blockades, the spokesman added.
