LEH July 18: The Minister for Urban Development and Local Bodies, Nawang Rigzin Jora along with CEC, LAHDC, Leh, Rigzin Spalbar laid the foundation stone of Multipurpose Indoor Stadium here today.
The project will be built under PYKKA/USIS scheme of Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
The Stadium having seating capacity of 1000 spectators is a project to come up at an estimated cost of Rs 797.68 lakhs, out of which Rs 600 lakhs have been sanctioned by the Government of India and balance expenditure will be borne by LAHDC, Leh.
The multipurpose stadium on its completion will have one basketball, volleyball and handball court each, three badminton courts, eight table tennis courts with two practice rooms, one dispensary, six player dorms, two change rooms, one gymnasium, one exercise room, one equipment store and two public conveniences.
Addressing the gathering of councilors, officers and the students, Mr Jora expressed happiness over the commencement of such a vital project, in addition to the construction of an open Stadium at Spituk near Airport the work on which started last year at a cost of Rs 20.35 crores.
He said that with the completion of these national level Stadiums, the youth of the region will have an opportunity to excel in sports at various levels.
Terming sports as an important part of education, Jora stressed upon the students to take sports seriously to build their career, pointing to the fact that athletes of mountainous regions have a biological advantage when performing in the plains.
Earlier, Executive Councilor for Sports, Gyurmet Dorjey spoke on the occasion and gave an overview of the project in detail.
All the Executive Councilors, Councilors, presidents of LBA and Hindu Sabha Leh were also present on the occasion.
