JAMMU, Mar 22: Following violent protest by the students, who were irked over alleged beating up of their colleague by the Dean Students Welfare, Jammu University is learnt to have suspended four students with immediate effect and also lodged a Police complaint against them.
The protesting students turned violent and ransacked the office of Dean Students Welfare after DSW Prof Satnam Kour allegedly beat up one of the protesters with a baton, this morning around 11 a.m.
The protesting students were demanding wi-fi and food facility in the hostel for all seven days of the week. They were also protesting against entry of Police on the campus without permission of the University authorities.
The trouble erupted this morning when a number of students, mostly hostel boarders, assembled near the Fountain Plaza and took out a protest march on the campus. They closed all entry and exit gates of the university thus prompting Dean Students Welfare Prof Satnam Kour to intervene.
Infuriated over the agitators’ refusal to open the university gate, Prof Satnam Kour allegedly snatched baton from a JU security guard and started hitting a student. This upset the protesting students, who resorted to ransacking of the office of Dean Students Welfare.
The violent protest continued till parents of some students reached the university and sought to pacify the situation. Later, the Vice-Chancellor Prof R D Sharma, who was not present in the university at the time of incident, also reached the campus and took a serious note of the episode.
In the evening, sources said that a decision was taken to suspend four students, who were allegedly involved in ransacking of the DSW office and a complaint against them was also forwarded to the Police Station Gandhi Nagar.
The students, against whom action has been initiated, were identified as Abhinandan Sharma of Law Department, Rishikesh Bhardwaj of Buddhist Studies Department, Sunny Parihar of DLL and Satvinder Singh of Law Department.
Despite repeated attempt, Dean Students Welfare did not respond to the phone call for her comments over the development.
