JAMMU, Dec 10: A one-day national seminar on ‘Contemporary World Literatures in English: A Cultural Study’ was organised by the Department of English, University of at Jammu University, in collaboration with Prof D K Rampal Memorial Trust.
Prof Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, JU, was the chief guest in the inaugural function. In his inaugural address, Prof Dhar said that contemporary worlds literature is an eclectic mix of movements like Postmodernism, Postcolonia-lism, feminism and many other emergent fields that need to be revisited and regenerated in critical and scholarly readings such as these to contextualise the understanding of the current times better.
Prof Anu Shukla from CDLUniversity, Sirsa, Haryana, delivered the keynote address in which she touched upon the theme of the seminar and brought out the neglect of the genre of crime fiction in Indian writing in English in contemporary critical discourse. She also outlined the suggested readings for the benefit of the scholars.
Former Vice Chancellor of Jammu University and Chairman of Prof D K Rampal Trust , Prof Y R Malhotra also spoke on the occasion and highlighted the vision of the Trust. He spoke of the need of the civil society to support such research activities and provide platform to the students and scholars to showcase their research.
Earlier, welcome address was presented by Prof Monika Sethi, Head, Dept of English and convener of the seminar . Prof. Sucheta Pathania, Professor, Department of English proposed the vote of thanks. Swati Vijay conducted the proceedings.
Those who were prominently present in the programme, included Prof Rajini Dhingra, Registrar JU, Prof. Satnam Kour Raina, Prof. Shiv Dev Manhas, , Prof Ramnandhan Singh, Prof Parmeshwari, Prof Parvinder Kour, Dr Riyaz Ahmed, Dr Vandana Sharma, Prof Geetanjali Rana, Dr Ravinder Singh, Dr Sadaf Shah, Dr Garima Gupta and others.
Eighty research papers were presented by the scholars of literature from across the country in eleven parallel technical sessions that were followed with intensive deliberations on the theme.
Prof Posh Charak distributed the certificates to the various paper presenters as chief guest of the valedictory function.
