JU team lifts Governor’s Silver Rolling Trophy

JAMMU, Dec 23: The team comprising Shivika Thakur and Zain-ul-Abdeen  of the University of Jammu lifted the Governor’s Silver Rolling Trophy  instituted by Governor N N Vohra, in the first  Annual North Zone Inter-University Declamation Contest.
The competition was organized by the Department of Students Welfare, University of Jammu. Governor N. N. Vohra, who is also the Chancellor of the University, was the chief guest at the valedictory function.
The topic of the inter-university declamation contest was “Is tolerance any longer relevant in promoting strong, stable and harmonious societies”.
Students from Punjab University, Chandigarh, Lovely Professional University, Guru Nanak Dev University, Central University of Jammu, University of Kashmir and the University of Jammu participated in the contest.
Sharing his views, Prof. R. D. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu said in this globalized world, where people of different backgrounds, cultures and religions are living together, and where the world has become multicultural and full of diversity, establishing tolerance and harmony has become very crucial and important, and fostering mutual love and affection has become vital.
“Tolerance is needed in all spheres of life, and on every level and on every stage, because it plays a vital role to establish peace and love, from the smallest unit up to the highest unit of society”, he maintained.
He said that it is the responsibility of the Universities & Institutes of Higher Education to focus on the personal and intellectual development of students and allowing parents to determine how best to educate their children, therefore, he added, “we must uphold to promote and exercise a universal culture of tolerance”.
Later, the Governor presented the Silver Rolling Trophy to the winning team and also gave away first, second and third prizes to the Best Speakers along with the certificates and mementos to the participating teams.
Prof. Pankaj K. Srivastava, Dean Students Welfare formally welcomed the august gathering, Prof. Alka Sharma Co-Chairperson, Campus Cultural Committee informed about the programme. Dr. Anupama Vohra, Associate Dean Students Welfare rendered the Vote of Thanks.
Earlier in the morning, the event was inaugurated by Prof. Poonam Dhawan, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Jammu. She expressed satisfaction over the organization of events that are organized to keep the young minds involved towards constructive things.
Pardeep Dutta, Bureau Chief, Times Now J&K, Dr. Sandhya Bharadwaj, Associate Professor, GCW, Parade and Anubhav Mathur from IIMC Jammu were the adjudicators for the contest whereas Dr. Vishwa Raksha and Dr. Garima Gupta were the teachers in charge for the event. Dr. A.R. Manhas, Dr. Yubhbir Singh Assistant Deans Students Welfare, faculty members, Officer’s ,students and scholars of the University of Jammu were present at the occasion.
