JAMMU, Dec 22: Describing Dogri as a very rich language, Prof RD Sharma, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, today called for preserving and promoting it and passing the rich literature in this language to posterity.
Speaking at a function held to celebrate the inclusion of Dogri language in 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution, Prof Sharma said this has been possible due to strenuous efforts of writers and intellectuals. He said Dogri deserve rightly to be included in the 8th schedule of the constitution as it is a proud repository of a glorious ethos.
Vice Chancellor said that languages should be used as an instrument to bind people and bringing about harmony in the Society by popularizing the writings of great writers which emphasize the crucial need of amity, tranquility and peace.
Prof Sharma exhorted scholars and students to learn and interact in other languages also as they have to face this competitive world in various spheres. Prof Sharma said that achievements of the scholars and students of the Dogri Department bring laurels to the University of Jammu and serve as an inspiration to others.
He asked the scholars of the Department of Dogri to focus on bringing out quality journals and also to get their papers published in the reputed journals so that their work gets recognized in the top-most journals.
Prof Veena Gupta, Former HoD, in her keynote address, spoke about the inclusion of the Dogri language in the Indian Constitution and said that constitutional recognition has opened new vistas for Dogri language but at the same time also entrusted new responsibilities. She also stressed on integrating Dogri in daily routine like education, business and commerce, IT, Science and media.
Prof Archana Kesar, Dean Research Studies and Prof Ramnika Jalali, presided over the function. Speaking on the occasion, Prof Ramnika Jalali threw light on the Dogri language.
Earlier, Prof Parmeshwari Sharma, Head Department of Dogri, presented the welcome address.
Prof Shiv Dev Singh Manhas presented vote of thanks. The proceedings of the programme were conducted by Dr Sushma Sharma.
On the occasion, Sunita, a student of MA presented a melodious Dogri song.
Among others present were Prof Kedar Nath, Prof Parvinder Kour, Dr Rajni Bala, Prof Sucheta Pathania, faculty members from other languages’ departments, scholars and students of the department
