JAMMU, Mar 19: The Post Offices have their own relevance even today in this era of competition and no one can compete with the postal set up given its large network across country and State. This was stated by Prof M P Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu during a Postal Summit titled “Post Office Transformation” organized by the J&K Postal Circle.
Professor Ishar who was chief guest on the occasion said University of Jammu itself uses the postal services for dispatching roll numbers, study material etc in a big way. He further informed that Jammu University has in principal decided to make the sale of admission forms through Post Offices across the State.
A K Thatai, Income Tax Commissioner, who was one of the panelists said that couriers stand nowhere against India Post and couriers operate in bigger cities alone while Post Offices are spread over even in small towns and villages. Sharing his experience of Speed Post, he said Courier Company once refused to book an article for Jodhpur which was later accepted happily by Post Office and sent through Speed Post.
OP Sharma, President J&K Bank, Jammu Zone while appreciating the work being done by postal employees stressed that adequate manpower and necessary infrastructure should be provided to improve the quality of services being offered by the department.
Prof Neelu Rohmetra of the Business School, University of Jammu, the other panelist expressing her views said Post Offices with its vast network and outreach should be transformed as business outlets to meet the market demands but this should be done without changing its unique identity. “Post Offices should revive its working by bringing packaged services for which customers are looking for”, she observed
Prof. Hemla Aggarwal, Principal Government College for Women, Parade said more services should be introduced by the Post Offices as per the local requirements.
The panelist were on the view that with limited resources as of now Post Offices are doing exceptionally well but there is dire need of infrastructure development and adequate man power to compete in the present scenario.
Speaking on the occasion John Samuel Chief Postmaster General, J&K said that 150 years old Department of Posts has been the backbone of the country’s communication and has played a crucial role in the country’s socio-economic development.
Amit Sharma, Director Finance, Postal, J&K Circle and Jagdeep Gupta, Director Postal Services, J&K Circle also spoke on the occasion.
