JAMMU, Jan 19: Jammu West Assembly Movement (JWAM) today held a protest demonstration and blocked vehicular traffic for half an hour at Janipur-High Court road against the failure of the State administration to cut down the passenger fare of buses, matadors and other means of transportation after repeated cut in petrol and diesel prices.
Addressing the protestors, JWAM president, Sunil Dimple said that in last few months, prices of petrol and diesel have gone quite down but despite that passenger fare of public vehicles like buses and mini-buses are same. He added that there is an urgent need to slash passenger fares so that daily commuters may take a sigh of relief.
He further said prices of petrol and diesel were not slashed by the Central Government according to price of crude oil in international market, which witnessed a steep cut in last few months.
Sunil Dimple appealed Governor N N Vohra to immediately pass the directions to the administration to revise the passenger fares in the State, as the daily commuters, particularly private employees and students are facing lot of problems due to high fares.
He stated that the retail price of petrol can come up to Rs 40/litre and the diesel Rs 30/litre if the Government honestly looks into the matter.
He urged PM Narendra Modi to exempt VAT, sale tax on the sale of the petrol, diesel, kerosene oil and LPG in the country so that the people could feel the return of “acchey din” in the country. He warned that in case the Government does not revise the passenger fare within one week’s time, JWAM will intensify the agitation.
