JAMMU, July 19: All India Confederation of SC,ST,OBC Organisations has submitted a memorandum to Lt Governor G C Murmu apprising him about the increasing caste based atrocities in J&K.
According to R K Kalsotra, State President of the Confederation, a latest case of caste atrocities was highlighted when Kamlesh Kumari, Sarpanch Panchayat Halqa Pochhal, Kishtwar was forced to resign due to mental and physical assault by few upper caste officials. Kamlesh Kumari was facing the brunt of caste hatred and discrimination in public and private sphere. She got threats by the accused which pushed her to resign from her post on July 18, 2020.
Kalsotra said that instances like these not only highlight the existence of caste discrimination being practiced in society but also expose the casteist approach of people in power and indifferent police system. “In this connection, a letter was sent to our LG, Chief Secretary and DGP J&K to take strict action against the accused according to the rule of law,” he said.
Kalsotra also remarked that such incidents have increased in the past some time and the police was not acting in favour of the Dalits as the provisions under SC/ST Atrocities Act clearly states that the accused has to be put behind bars immediately.
“The dignity and respect granted by the Constitution of India and the institution of Panchayati Raj for good governance is under threat. The administration should pay heed to these incidents so that the public can have faith in the ideals of democracy and constitution,” Kalsotra said and requested LG, CS and DGP to look into the matter and attend to the case immediately so that the dignity of a democratically elected Sarpanch can be restored.
