JAMMU, July 26: Heroes of Kargil war were paid rich tributes during various functions organised by Army, political, social, trade and youth organizations besides Educations institutions across the State today. The day was marked as Vijay Divas in which top Army Commanders, retired Defence personnel and others paid their respect to the martyrs.
GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lt Gen D S Hooda attended the grand ceremony at Drass War Memorial in district Kargil and paid his rich tributes to the heroes of Kargil war with Pakistan. Several senior Army commanders including GOC Fire and Fury Corps and GOC Forever in Ops Division were present on the occasion.
On this occasion, Col Basu Deb Maitra, Hony Retd Ex-Director and Lt Col Dipak Das, Hony Retd, Ex-Dy Director ( Photo) of Photo Division Directorate of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence were honoured by Northern Army Commander.
A solemn ceremony was also held at Nagrota Garrison to commemorate the 17th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Divas.
General Officer Commanding White Knight Corps Lt Gen RR Nimbhorkar paid floral tributes to the martyrs and brave soldiers in a wreath laying ceremony held at Ashwamedh Shaurya Sthal at Nagrota Garrison. The notes of the bugle playing the Last Post were testimony to the valour and the supreme sacrifice of martyrs and brought back somber memories of those days.
Each year since 1999, the Army observes Kargil Vijay Divas to remember its soldiers who laid down their lives in Kargil district in the cold desert region of Ladakh during the conflict between India and Pakistan. The Kargil conflict was the most serious military engagement between the two neighbours since the war of 1971. The Kargil war was fought for more than 60 days and ended on July 26.
The General Officer in his message to the troops, exhorted to rededicate themselves to the nation and excel in all future endeavours. This day is a reminder of the sacrifices made by Indian soldiers towards flushing out infiltrators from our sacred motherland.
A wreath laying ceremony was conducted at the war memorial at Siachen brigade on the occasion of “Kagil Vijay Diwas” today, where the Siachen Brigade Commander Brig Nagendra Singh paid respect to the Kargil war heroes.
During the Kargil war, many battles were fought and won by gallant soldiers of Indian Army in Shyok Valley. Skirmishes took place at freezing heights of Sangar ridge in the area of Turtuk where Indian Army dislodged a motivated and fierce enemy from the barren and razor sharp ridgelines.
To honour and recall the sacrifices of our brave and valiant soldiers, the Kargil Vijay Diwas was celebrated today at Udhampur, with due solemnity and dignity.
As part of the celebrations, the Kargil War Memorial at the Sharadhanjali Park was illuminated in the evening and all ranks and families of the Garrison paid their homage and expressed eternal gratitude towards the ‘Savours of the Nation’, by lighting candles.
Rashtriya Rifles Force Headquarters (Uniform) based at Reasi paid homage to soldiers who laid down their lives defending the nations border during the Kargil war.
On the occasion in solemn ceremony, the officiating General Officer Commanding paid homage to the martyrs by laying a wreath on behalf of all officers, JCOs and others ranks at the War Memorial. Similar ceremony was held at Samba Garrison where Brig R S Rana paid tributes to war heroes.
BJP also organised function at Party office Jammu and paid rich tributes to the martyrs of Kargil war. Besides Assembly Speaker Kavinder Gupta and Yudhvir Sethi state vice president, several other party leaders and workers attended the function. MLA Ravinder Raina and MLC Charanjit Singh attended similar function at Qila Darhal in Nowshera.
Congress party also organised function at the party office here today and paid tributes to the Kargil war heroes. PCC general secretary Ravinder Sharma and several other leaders attended the function.
Dogra Saddar Sabha, Ex-Servicemen League, Dogra Law College, Forum for Awareness of National Security, Rich Harvest School, NCC wing of GGM Science College Jammu, Shri Ram Sena J&K, Dr Ambedkar Convent School, Shiv Shakti Sena J&K, Welfare Society Nanak Nagar and several other organization paid homage to the martyrs of Kargil war, in various functions organised here today.
