Kashmir highway closed due to snowfall, landslides

SRINAGAR, Feb 22: The 300-km-long Srinagar-Jammu national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was closed this morning due to fresh snowfall.
A traffic police spokesman said here that the highway has been closed due to fresh snowfall at Patnitop, Jawahar tunnel, Banihal and Qazigund since early this morning.
There was about one feet of snowfall at Jawhar tunnel, he said, adding that heavy rains triggered landslides in Ramban sector at six places on the highway.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, has pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to put through the highway, which was open for only one-way since December 14 when there was heavy snowfall.
The national highway, connecting the Ladakh region with the rest of the state besides roads to far-flung and remote area, including those near Line of Control (LoC) in the Kashmir valley remained closed since December last year due to snowfall.
Maeanwhile, Kashmir Valley got slight respite from the cold wave conditions as the minimum temperature appreciated by a couple of degrees.
