SRINAGAR : Several thousand vehicles, including those carrying passengers, today left winter capital, Jammu, as the highway, connecting the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, remained open for one-way traffic.
“We have allowed vehicles from Jammu to Kashmir this morning after all vehicles, stranded on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel, were cleared yesterday,” a traffic police official said here.
He said the highway was closed on March 11 following heavy snowfall and landslides, shooting stones at more than a dozen places, including Penthal, Digdol and Batrey Cheshma.
However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, worked round the clock to put through the highway early yesterday morning.
All the vehicles which were stranded since March 10 and allowed to move towards their respective destination reached Jammu and Srinagar till late in the night yesterday.
Official sources said thousands of passengers, who were stranded at Jammu for the past three days, were allowed to move towards Kashmir this morning.
Similarly, hundreds of trucks, carrying essentials, are also on way to Kashmir from Jammu, they said, adding that only one-way traffic will continue on the highway till further orders to allow free movement of vehicles. However, people alleged that despite one-way traffic jam on the highway has become a routine. (AGENCIES)
