Kashmiri Pandits threaten ‘fast unto death’

Srinagar, June 4: Dozens of Kashmiri Pandits today protested against “callous attitude” of the Central and State Governments towards their problems, particularly re-drafting and passing of the pending Kashmir Temples and Shrines Bill in Legislative Assembly, dialogue with Pakistan for facilitating visit to Sharda Peeth Temple in PoK and special employment package for them.
Shouting slogans against both the Central as well as State Governments for their failure to mitigate their problems, representatives of All Parties Migrants Coordination Committee (APMCC), Kashmiri Pandit Sangarsh Samiti (KPSS) and other Kashmiri Pandit (KP) bodies threatened that if their demands are not fulfilled on priority, they would “sit on fast unto death” during the Janamashtami Festival on August 17.
“We have the six-point charter of demands: re-drafting Temples and Shrines Bill, probe into encroachment of shrine and temple lands in Kashmir valley, establishment of Sharda Peeth University in the State and one time compensation for over-aged Kashmiri Hindu youth outside Valley,” they said.
The protesters tried to march towards city centre Lal Chowk, but police foiled it.
They angry protesters said that last year Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation Minister had assured in writing that our demands were being considered, but after that nothing has happened.
