POONCH, Dec 2: Kathua Hockey Club thrashed Waryam Hockey Club by three goals to zero (3-0) in the finals and lifted the title trophy of the 17th Waryam Singh Memorial Hockey Championship title organised by Waryam Singh Hockey Club under the aegis of Hockey J&K here today.
During the match, players of both the teams strived hard, but players of Kathua Club at last paved way for the title trophy by outplaying Waryam Club by 3-0 goals. Skipper of Waryam Hockey Club Salil Raina missed six opportunities to net goals, which in the last proved costly for the team.
On the valedictory function, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Ajeet Kumar Sahu was the chief guest, who handed over the title trophy to the winning team. Besides, trophies and medals were also presented to the players of the participating teams.
While speaking, DDC Poonch Ajeet Kumar Sahu appreciated the efforts of the organizers for organizing the tournament and bringing out the hidden talent of the players.
“Poonch is blessed with unique talent and it is the responsibility of people to channelize their energy into sports and other activities rather than social evils”, Sahu added.
SP Poonch Shamsher Hussain, who was the guest of honour on the occasion congratulated the organizing committee for successful hosting of Hockey Championship and assured full support of the department by organizing similar championships in future.
Mohd Tariq Khan while speaking highlighted the achievements of Waryam Singh Club in promoting Hockey for the last two decades.
Arvinder Singh Lovely, NRI, has also announced Rs 15,000 for best goalkeeper telephonically from Canada.
The match was officiated by Narinder Singh, Harmik Singh, Ruchika Sharma, Amarjeet Singh, Ramanjot Singh and Kulwant Singh.
The tournament was organised under the supervision of Manjeet Singh and under the guidance of Hockey J&K president Romal Singh and Hockey India general secretary Narender Batra.
