Srinagar, Jan 21: Dozens of residents of Keegam village in South Kashmir’s Shopian district today went on hunger strike to press for tehsil status to the village.
The protesters said the village has 52 neighbouring villages in its vicinity from Alawpora to Keller and a teshil status would help people to redress their day to day problems at their nearest village.
Raja Waheed, a protester, said the village has been granted naibat status 42 years back which was suitable village to have a tehsil status now. “Keegam has been a central point from last many decades and it must be granted tehsil status,” he said.
The protesters also blocked the main road connecting Shopian district headquarters with Pulwama and Srinagar districts.
