SRINAGAR, Apr 28: The Kashmir Flood Victims Welfare Forum (KFVWF) held a protest against Government’s failure to provide adequate relief to flood affected families and traders at Lal Chowk here today. A large number of flood effected people and traders participated in the protest.
The protesters shouted slogans against the State and Central Governments which they said had failed to accommodate the flood victims even after the lapse of seven months. The protestors complained that the State and Central Governments have turned deaf ear to flood victims’ genuine demands and did not actively pursue the relief packages. The Government has not shown the kind of seriousness in Kashmir floods as it showed in Uttrakhand floods, they complained.
The convener of Kashmir Flood Victims Forum, Umar Bhat said that the relief provided so far to flood affected families and business sector did not satisfy anyone. “The flood relief cheques of Rs 3800 and Rs 12500 did not even meet the labour cost of cleaning flooded houses and business establishments”, he said. Bhat said that it was high time for both the Governments to reach out to the affected families and traders with appropriate financial assistance.
The protestors threatened that they will take to streets and roads with their families if the Government did not redress their grievances within shortest time.
The spokesman of KFVMF demanded the State Government to ensure quick discharge, as per design capacity, from Jhelum, its tributaries and flood spill channel and also demanded Central Government to provide special package for development of tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
