JAMMU, Aug 1: While defending the Union Government’s decision to maintain National Register for Citizens (NRC), Union Minister in PMO with independent charge of North Eastern States, Dr Jitendra Singh today said that it is the responsibility of any Government to protect the rights of its citizens.
Talking to Excelsior on phone, the Union Minister said that no Government can impinge the rights of its genuine citizens and like Assam the NRC be applied to Jammu and Kashmir which is also a border State and facing the cross border terrorism for three decades now.
Meanwhile, BJP senior leader and MLC Ashok Khajuria while strongly defending the Union Government decision to maintain NRC said that the same should be immediately applied to J&K which is also a vulnerable border State like Assam and is in the grip of cross border terrorism.
He, while stressing on maintaining of National Register for Citizens in J&K as early as possible said that all the foreigners from the State be deported as they can be a security threat and play in the hands of terrorist organizations.
Khajuria, while turning tables on those political leaders who are opposing the decision said that instead of joining hands with the Government on the issue they are trying to exploit the situation for their vested interests.
He said the people who are supporting settlement of foreigners in the country are the enemies of the nation and they be dealt under the law. He said it is unfortunate that the West Pakistani refugees who are living in the State for over last 70 years have been deprived of citizenship rights though they were the victims of unfortunate partition and are the patriots by core while the Bangladeshis and Rohingyas are being given all the rights and facilities which can’t be tolerated now.
Khajuria, while expressing total solidarity with the Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitely’s statement in this regard said maintenance of NRC is must as outside settlers are proving a threat to national unity and integrity.
BJP general secretary, Dr Narinder Singh while supporting the maintenance of NRC has accused Congress of playing petty politics for its narrow political ends on the issue.
In a statement issued here, today he said on the issue of illegal immigrants in Assam Congress is doing disservice to the country by raking up the issue for the vote bank politics.
Dr Narender Singh dealt with the genesis of the Assam Accord signed by then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi on August 15, 1985. It was a Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) signed between the Government of India, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) and the All Assam Gana Sangram Parishad. (AAGSP) and the NRC originated from the same accord, he added.
He praised the Prime Minister Narendra Modi led Government for complying with the Supreme Court directions to identify the illegal immigrants in the State of Assam and demanded that same steps be taken for deporting the illegal settlers of Bangladesh and Myanmar in J&K.
