Korea qualify for Hockey World Cup

New Delhi, Aug 18:
Korea today became the eight team to qualify for the FIH men’s Hockey World Cup after being promoted from first reserves to guaranteed participants, courtesy Argentina’s title win in the Pan American continental championship.
The winners of the Men’s Pan American Cup were to get direct entry into next year’s World Cup, but since Argentina having already qualified for the big event, thanks to a second place finish at last month’s Hockey World League semi-final in Malaysia, a world cup ticket was handed to Korea.
Korea had missed out on direct World Cup qualification by finishing fourth in Johor Bahru.
The joint men’s and women’s World Cup event will be held from May 31 to June 15 next year in The Hague, Netherlands
Four more places are up for grabs at the upcoming continental championships in Europe, Asia, Oceania and Africa. Seven women’s teams have also been confirmed for the event, with the five remaining places currently available through the continental championships. (PTI)
