LEH, Apr 6: Ladakh Marathon, which is considered to be one of the world’s highest altitude marathons, will be organized from September 7 to 10. It is the 10th edition for which registration is going to start from tomorrow at 11 am onward.
The Ladakh marathon is being organized in the support of the UT Administration, LAHDC, numerous associations, village societies, Indian Army, Indian Air Force, Ladakh Scouts and the ITBP.
It is pertinent to mention here that the marathon was started in 2012 to show the world that Ladakh was up and running following the devastating flash-floods. The marathon was also started to encourage the youth to take up running not only to lead a healthy lifestyle but also to give them a platform to participate and perform at a competitive level.
The Ladakh Marathon is an annual event certified by AIMS (Association of International Marathons and Distance Races).
From 1,500 participants in the 1st edition in four disciplines/runs to close to 6,000 participants in the 9th edition in six disciplines/runs, from India and around the world, Ladakh Marathon has grown over these years.
One of the reasons for holding the Ladakh Marathon in September was to extend the tourist season. Runners with their families/friends come and spend a minimum of six to eight nights in Leh in preparation for the run and during this time they visit different parts of Ladakh.
The organizers of the marathon have always been concerned about the impact of holding such a mass event in a fragile environment. In 2019 a conscious decision was taken to ban the use of single-use plastic for the event, thus working towards making it an environment friendly marathon.
