Lakhs join night-long prayers on Eid-i-Milad in Kashmir, Ladakh

SRINAGAR : Eid-i-Milad-un-Nabi, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad was today celebrated with religious gaiety and fervour in the Kashmir valley and Ladakh region.
Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra, Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and leaders of different political parties greeted people on the occasion.
Undeterred by below freezing temperature, lakhs of people, including women and children joined the night-long prayers in shrines, mosques, Jamia masjids and other holy places in the Kashmir valley and Leh and Kargil.
The main congregation was held at Aasar-e-Sharief  Hazratbal which houses the holy Relic of Prophet Muhammad on the bank of famed Dal Lake.
Thousands of devotees from different parts of the valley and outsides joined the special night-long prayers at Hazratbal shrine despite below freezing temperature.          However, the authorities had made special arrangements for the devotees, including women and children, wearing colourful dresses.
Immediately after Fajr (morning) prayers, devotees had the glimpse of Holy Relic. The process will continue throughout the day today and tomorrow and devotees will have Deedar (glimpse) of the Holy Relic after every prayers.          Similarly congregations were also organised at Aasar-e-Sharief Shehri Kalashpora, Aasar-e-Sharief Pinjoora, mosques, Jamia Masjids and other holy places in the valley.          Reports received here said that special prayers were also organised at Leh, Kargil and Drass and other places in Ladakh region.
Mr Vohra, has greeted the people on the auspicious occasion of Eid-i-Milad-un-Nabi  and expressed sincere hope that this auspicious occasion would be the harbinger of harmony, peace, progress and prosperity in the State.      In a message of greetings, the Governor said that Islam teaches us the values of brotherhood, simplicity, compassion and morality, all of which need to be vigorously inculcated in today’s trouble torn world.
The Governor prayed for the well-being and happiness of the people of the State.     Mr Sayeed also extended greetings to the people on the auspicious occasion.
In his message, Mr Sayeed described Islam as the religion of peace and Prophet Mohammad (SAW) as an apostle of love, affection and brotherhood. ?Almighty Allah had sent Prophet Muhammad as Rehmatal-lil-Alimeen (mercy to the mankind), he added.
Reminding people of the holy Prophet’s teachings, the Chief Minister said the holy Prophet had tremendous love for humanity in general and compassion for poor and needy in particular.
I pray to Almighty Allah to reignite our heart and souls with the love of the Prophet (SAW) of Islam, he added. Leaders of other political, religious and social organizations have also greeted people on the occasion. (UNI)
