JAMMU, July 20: Veteran Congress leader and two times Member Parliament from Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha seat, Choudhary Lal Singh today declared his intentions to quit Congress.
Lal Singh, who had won Basohli Assembly seat in 1996 and 2002 Assembly elections before contesting Lok Sabha elections in 2004 and 2009 and winning both the times, had not been keeping good relations with the Congress after he was denied party mandate in 2014 Lok Sabha elections in which party had fielded former Union Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who had lost to BJP’s Dr Jitendra Singh.
Sources said Lal Singh made his intentions to quit the Congress clear during weekly meeting of the party workers in Kathua today. He also discussed the available options with the party workers.
Lal Singh had not campaigned for Azad during Lok Sabha elections and since then he has maintained distance from the party.
Sources said Lal Singh could make a formal announcement of his future political strategy shortly.
