SRINAGAR, Oct 13: Gan-dhi Global Family, J&K in association with United Nations (UNIC), New Delhi organised match for special children in J&K State as a part of Gandhi-Mandela Cricket Series.
The match was held at Government Amar Singh College Cricket Ground Srinagar in presence of Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir, Shafi Pandit, Chairman YHAI and former Chairperson J&K PSC, Prof M Aslam Baba, Kiran Mehra Kerpelman UNIC Director and Padmashri SP Varma, GGF Vice President.
The match was played between Rose XI Jammu and Lavender XI Kashmir, in which latter emerged winner by 7 wickets and the wining team player Amir Yousuf was declared as man of the match for his overall performance.
Gold and silver medals were presented to winning Lavender XI and runner up Rose XI respectively.
While speaking, Shafi Pandit said that Gandhi Global Family is working remarkably under the leadership of Padmashri SP Varma. He said volunteerism is the main aspect of such events which largely provides supports to underprivileged and needy.
Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon said that the main objective of such tournament is to encourage special children and to bring them in main stream.
Farooq Renzu Shah, former Director Information and Principal Government Amar Singh College Srinagar Prof M Aslam Baba also spoke on the occasion.
Earlier, Ashok Kapoor GGF briefed that this unique tournament gave unprecedented opportunity to over 720 special children to play directly and over thousands of orphan children got motivated through this initiative.
Among others present were Sanjana Subramanyam, Vijay Sharma, Sourab Agarwal, Sajjan Singh, Dr Lubna Khan, Mohammad Farooq Mughal, Abdul Ahad Nazar, Syed Ather, Mohammad Shawl, Imran Khan, etc.
