Law, MCA Depts claim volleyball, chess titles

JAMMU, Apr 2: Law Department outplayed Geology Department by 3-2 sets and claimed the title trophy of the volleyball event, while as MCA Department outplayed Law Department and lifted the title trophy of the chess event, organized during the ongoing Inter Department Tournament (Men) by Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu at gymnasium hall, here today.
In cricket, Environmental Science Department and Physics and Electronics Department registered convincing wins in their respective matches and adavced to the next round of the event.
In the first match, Environmental Science Department registered 80 runs victory over Buddhist Department and sailed into the next round of the ongoing tournament.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Environmental Science Department scored 208 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets in allotted 20 overs. Sajad played well and chipped in some crispy shots in his 72 runs contribution including 13 balls towards the fence, while Ranjan also made 53 runs with the help of 8 boundaries. Arvind also contributed 27 runs.
For Buddhist Department side, Varender claimed 2 wickets, while Bikram took one wicket.
In the second inning, Buddhist Department failed to chase the target and bundled out at just 128 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in stipulated 20 overs. Varender was the top scorer with 54 runs including five boundaries and one lofty six, while Stanzin and Surinder contributed 15 and 13 runs respectively.
For Environmental Science Department, Sumit and Pankaj were the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets each, while, Sajad, Arvind and Ranjan scalped one wicket apiece.
In the second match, Physics and Electronics Department thrashed Mathematics Department by 8 wickets and registered their birth in the next round of the event.
Batting first after winning the toss, Mathematics Department scored paltry 99 runs for all out in 16.1 overs. Amit Jasrotia chipped in 41 runs with the help of 6 boundaries, while Arun Sharma and Ashwani contributed 19 and 14 runs respectively.
For Physical and Electronics Department, Narotam Singh and Ashish were the wrecker-in-chief with three wickets each, while Nitin also scalped 2 wickets.
While batting, Physics and Electronics Department chased the target easily in just 13.3 overs with the loss of just 2 wickets during the process. Rakeh Parashar was the top scorer with 33 runs, while Mukesh and Deepak also chipped in 19 and 14 runs respectively.
For Mathematics Department side, Minka and Romesh proved their worth and claimed one wicket each.
The cricket matches were officiated by Suresh Singh, Vijay Dogra, Raj Kumar and Ajit Kumar as umpires, while, Satpal maintained the scorecard.
The final match of the volleyball was officiated by Mulkh Raj Sharma, Imtiaz Ahmed and Stanzin Namsas, while the final match of the chess event was officiated by Maxmin Singh.
The tournament is being organized under the supervision of Prof Dhian Singh Bhau, Director, Directorate of Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu.
