SRINAGAR : Leh and Kargil have frozen s as the mercury dropped to minus 10 and minus 7.4 degree Celsius respectively, while the summer capital, Srinagar witnessed coldest night of the season with 0.4 degree was minimum temperature.
Night temperature will drop further because of open sky and dry weather in the next 24 hours, a Met department spokesperson said.
However, people continue to wear warm clothes and use electronic and other gadgets, besides “Kangri” ( Kashmiri fire pot) to keep themselves warm because of icy cold winds though sun was also out in the Kashmir valley today, Leh, going to polls on November 25 along with three other constituencies of Nobra, Kargil and Zanaskar, witnessed the coldest night of the season after the mercury dropped to minus 10 degree, freezing water bodies, as a result the discharge in the rivers has also dropped. Earlier, lowest was minus eight degree, recorded yesterday.
Kargil, a border town, also recorded coldest night after the minimum temperature dropped to minus 7.4 degree. a notch less than yesterday, when it was minus 6.6 degree. However, the temperature at Drass, second coldest place in the world after Siberia, was not available. Met spokesperson said there was a possibility of further drop in the minimum temperature as the weather will remain dry during the next 24 hours.
The summer capital also recorded coldest night of the season so far, as the minimum temperature dropped to 0.4 degree, a notch below normal. The earlier lowest was 1.4 degree. Health resort of Pahalgam remained coldest in the Valley with minus 2.6 degree, about three notches below normal, while the ski resort of Gulmarg recorded minus one degree. (agencies)
