Leh not heading towards UT: Omar

SRINAGAR, July 30: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today said that the State carved out on the basis of agitations could act as incentive to those who are agitating for similar demands from other parts of the country.
Omar told reporters on the sidelines of a function held at Srinagar’s Amar Singh College that giving in to the demand of creating a separate Telangana State in the backdrop of an agitation was a dangerous thing.
“An impression is going out that an agitation can lead to creation of a new State, be it in Bundelkhand, Maharashtra, Gorkhaland or in our state. What will you tell people of Jammu. Are you encouraging people that you agitate for few years and you will get a separate State? Would you tell them keep on agitating for 8 to 10 years and your demand would be fulfilled.  This is a dangerous thing,” Chief Minister said.
Omar said: “It is fine that you have to create Telangana but don’t do it in piece meals. This way the agitations are being incentivised.”
Chief Minister said the job of creating new states should be entrusted to the States Reorganisation Commission. “If there is a need to create new states, the job should be entrusted to the States Reorganisation Commission.”
On a question about the Ladakh heading towards Union Territory status, Omar denied that it is heading towards the UT. “Ladakh is not reaching towards any UT status. The only thing that we are doing is to make sure that powers are made available to them under the Hill Council. Please understand that there is still necessary administrative relationship between the State and Leh and Kargil”, he added.
While replying to a question, Omar said that former Chief Minister and PDP patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed would never secure 40 seats.
“How can he resolve Kashmir issue when he would never reach to that mark? He can say anything. Why didn’t he resolve the issue when he was in Coalition with Congress and other parties and was having more than 50 seats,” Omar said.
