RAJOURI, Nov 29: Sighting of a leopard in Dera Ki Gali (DKG) area of Thannamandi and Bafliaz during night time have caused widespread fear among nomadic families and local villagers and the commuters.
These wild animals have been observed roaming close to the road, posing a severe threat to the safety of people and livestock. The situation has become particularly alarming as nomadic families are currently descending from the upper reaches, making them highly vulnerable to potential attacks.
Eyewitnesses have reported multiple sightings of the animals in forest area and on the road itself, particularly during the evening and early morning hours. These incidents have disrupted the normal movement of commuters, who now fear traveling through the area. The route, a critical link in the region, is frequently used by nomads with their livestock, heightening concerns about their safety.
The local community has issued an urgent appeal to the Wildlife Department to address the matter without delay. Residents have requested that immediate steps be taken to ensure their safety, such as deploying wildlife personnel for monitoring the area, installing warning signs along the route, and relocating the animals to safer habitats away from human settlements.
A community leader emphasized the urgency of the matter, stating, “Nomadic families and travelers are at constant risk. We appeal to the Wildlife Department to take proactive measures to avoid any tragic incidents.”
Meanwhile, the Wildlife Department has been requested to explore long-term strategies for mitigating human-wildlife conflicts in the region, including strengthening wildlife habitats.
