Militants flee from Kulgam gun battle, 2 soldiers injured

Srinagar, Apr 9: A Lashkar-e-Toiba commander was killed in a gunfight in Sirhama area of Bijbehara in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district today while two soldiers were injured in a gun battle in Kulgam district but militants managed to flee from the cordon.
Acting on specific information generated by police regarding presence of militants in Sirhama, a joint cordon and search operation was launched by Police and 3rdRR in the area.

“As the search party proceeded towards the suspected spot, a hiding militant fired indiscriminately upon the search party which retaliated leading to an encounter,” a police official said.
The hiding militant identified as LeT commander Nisar Ahmad Dar alias Musaib son of Ghulam Hassan Dar resident of Redwani Bala, Kulgam was killed in the gun battle.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that slain was a categorized militant and active since April 4, 2021. He said he was involved in several killing of civilians and non-local labourers besides in grenade lobbing attacks on security forces.
Kumar appreciated the joint team and termed the killing of Nisar Dar, a big success as he was wanted by law. “Incriminating materials, arms and ammunition have been recovered from the site of the encounter. Police have registered a case under relevant Sections of law regarding the encounter and further investigation is in progress.”
Meanwhile, militants managed to give slip to the security forces after a brief exchange of fire in Chaki Samad area of DH Pora of Kulgam district today.
A joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched an operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area on this morning.
The official said that as the joint team of security forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which retaliated, triggering a gunfight.
He added that during the initial exchange of fire two soldiers- Rohit Yadav and Ankesh Kumar – were injured and were shifted to hospital for treatment. However, after the initial exchange of fire, no contact was established with the militants.
He added that cordon layers were tightened after initial exchange of fire, however, nothing has been found following which operation has been called off.
In the meantime, police in Budgam arrested two militant associates of the LeT in Budgam district today.
A police spokesman said that police in Budgam along with 2RR and 179Bn CRPF arrested two militant associates of outfit LeT from orchard area of Rathsun Beerwah, Budgam.
They have been identified as Wajid Yousuf Akhoon, son of Mohammad Yousuf Akhoon of Rathsun Beerwah and Mohammad Ashraf Sheikh, son of Wali Mohammad Sheikh of Kawoosa Khalisa.
“Incriminating materials of outfit LeT, arms and ammunition including one Chinese pistol, two pistol magazines, 12 pistol rounds have been recovered from their possession,” police said, adding that a case under FIR number 35/2022 under relevant Sections of law has been registered at Police Station Beerwah and investigation has been initiated.
