Srinagar, Oct 27: In a major breakthrough, security forces today arrested a Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant and claimed that he was tasked to re-activate the militancy in Baramulla.
DIG North Kashmir, J P Singh told Excelsior that Police achieved a major success by arresting a local operative of JeM, Javed Ahmad Dar, who along with surrendered militants was trying to revive militant operations in Baramulla.
Singh said: “On receiving information about his movement we had laid check points at Singbagh in Baramulla and from the search of a vehicle we arrested Javed Ahmad Dar and recovered one pistol, a magazine and 10 rounds from him.”
He termed the arrest as a major breakthrough for Baramulla Police. “This is important breakthrough for Baramulla police, as Baramulla has not been active as far as militancy is concerned”, he said.
Singh said that the efforts to revive militancy in the district have received a major blow with his arrest. “…but the desperate attempts by militants to re-activate Baramulla and see the militancy is on rise again here will receive a blow by the arrest of this man”.
Singh disclosed that Dar was one of the members of the module and said that police expects more arrests. “We are investigating the case and some more arrests are likely to take place”, he added.
A police spokesman, however, said that Police and 46 Rashtriya Rifles of Army on a specific information launched a joint operation and arrested one Javed Ahmad Dar son of late Mohammad Akber Dar, resident of Khanpora, Baramulla.
The spokesman said that Javed was recently assigned a key role by local JeM commanders for reviving militancy in and around Baramulla town. He said that an FIR (366/13 under Section 7/25 Arms Act) has been registered and investigations are on.
Sources said that Dar was arrested by police at least thrice and was booked under Public Safety Act (PSA) twice on charges of stone pelting.
A Srinagar based Defence spokesman said here that on specific intelligence based operation against a suspect militant resulted in the apprehension and prevention of target killing of security personnel.
The Defence spokesman further said that inputs were being received through Army sources about the activities of a suspected militant who was making desperate attempts to procure a weapon, allegedly for executing the task of target killing as a pre-requisite for recruitment into a militant outfit.
“On October 25, an intercept was received, revealing his efforts to procure a weapon. Again on October 26, another intercept indicating that he was going to Sopore to collect the weapon and would return to Baramulla was received by the Army intelligence”, the spokesman said.
The spokesman said: “Accordingly, on October 26 the operations were launched by the Army unit along with SOG personnel from Baramulla in general area of Singbagh and a joint Mobile Vehicle Check Post (MVCP) was established. The individual, on seeing the MVCP attempted to escape. However he was overpowered in a short time.”
“One 7.62 mm Chinese pistol, one magazine and 10 rounds were recovered from him. He has a record of being arrested thrice for law and order problems”, the spokesman said.
