Life limping back to normal in Jammu

JAMMU:  After two days of tension following the desecration of an ancient temple by a “mentally disturbed” person, situation in Jammu returned to normal today with the authorities mulling to revoking the suspension of mobile internet services.

“Situation has returned to complete normal and we are in the process of revoking the suspension of the mobile internet services by the evening”, Deputy Commissioner, Jammu, Simrandeep Singh said.

He said no incident of violence or protest was reported across Jammu.

“Barring a few incidents of protest yesterday, the situation has remained completely normal,” Singh said.

He said the decision to suspend the mobile internet services across the Jammu region was taken to check rumour-mongering which could have further vitiated the situation.

“Instructions have been given to the telecom service operators to restore internet services by this evening,” he said.

The deputy commissioner said the police deployment would continue in the area for some time.

“We cannot remove the entire police force all of a sudden and, as per procedure, police deployment would continue to be there for some time,” he said.

Singh said the situation was in under control and investigation into the alleged desecration has already begun.

Jammu city had on Tuesday witnessed violent protests with people engaging in stone pelting and arson after the CCTV footage of the alleged desecration of the Aap Shambu temple in the Roop Nagar area went viral.

People in large numbers came on the roads and attacked the local police station over alleged mishandling of the situation.

They also observed a bandh yesterday to protest against the desecration. (agencies)
