LEH, Aug 31: Ladakh University Vice Chancellor, C. Phuntsog here today inaugurated 19th conference of International Associations for Ladakh Studies (IALS) ‘Negotiating Change in Trans-Himalayas’ at Central Institute of Buddhist Studies (CIBS).
The 5-day conference is being organised by IALS in collaboration with CIBS where scholar and writers of national and international repute are participating.
Speaking on the occasion Vice Chancellor, C. Phuntsog said that Ladakh is separate field to studies in all respects.
“Ladakh is already a famous tourist destination and needs no introduction to outsiders but the challenge is to give right direction to the future course of development so as to obviate adverse consequences of tourism on social-cultural life of the region” he said.
Additional District Development Commissioner, Moses Kunzang said topics for the 5-days are very interesting and urged for compilation of the presentations.
Presenting the key notes speech Kaneez Fatima, Former Secretary Education Department and senior member of IALS said this conference will provide common platform to scholars, academician, researchers and students to exchange ideas.
IALS President Dr. Sonam Wangchuk while presenting the welcome address said that ever since Ladakh was open to tourist and scholar in 1974, number of reputed scholars, researchers and students visited the place to conduct study on different topic and added that during the 5-days conference 79 papers on different topics will be presented. He expressed happiness of growth of IALS with more than 300 members mainly youth taking keen interest.
IALS patron scholar Tashi Rabgais, CIBS Director Geshes Konchok Wangdus and CIBS Prof Konchok Rigzin also spoke on the occasion.
On the occasion two books written by Nawang Tsering Shakspo and Lhundup Galpo were released.
