JAMMU, July 5: At 39 years of age, ace Army mountaineer and son of the soil Major Ranveer Singh Jamwal, VSM, who hails from village Badhori in Samba district, has climbed the 18,510-feet Mount Elbrus in the Caucasus range in Russia on June 26, 2014.
Pertinent to mention that Maj Ranveer has the distinction of scaling Mt Everest twice and that too in a span of one year. He is the first person from Jammu and Kashmir to scale Mt Everest twice.
Mount Elbrus with an elevation of 18,510 feet (5,642 meters) is part of the Caucasus range, near the Georgian border in Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay–Cherkessia, Russia.
Maj Jamwal was the only Indian in the team of 10 mountaineers led by the Russian Guide Eugene. Seven of the members withdrew from the summit attempt due to poor weather conditions.
Mount Elbrus is perpetually snow-covered with an icecap and 22 glaciers from where three major rivers — Baksan, Malka, and Kuban — arise. It is considered an inactive volcano. There is an 800-ft-wide snow-filled volcanic crater on the mountain’s western summit.
Earlier, Maj Jamwal has  participated in 18 mountaineering expeditions  including Mt Everest, the highest mountain in the world twice in 2012 & 2013, Mt Aconcagua, the highest peak in South American Continent in 2012 and Mt Killimanjaro, the highest mountain in African Continent in 2010 to name a few.
Major Ranveer was honoured with Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award-2013 which is equivalent to Arjuna Award, the highest in sports faculty.
