Srinagar, Aug 30: The Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Tournament, which began on August 19 at the Polo View Hockey Stadium in Srinagar, concluded with a thrilling final match here today. The Chinar Strikers emerged victorious, defeating Baramula with a score of 1-0. This tournament was organized by the Headquarters 31 Sub Area of the Chinar Corps in collaboration with the J&K Sports Council and Hockey J&K to commemorate National Sports Day, celebrated on 29 August every year in honor of Major Dhyan Chand, India’s greatest field hockey player. The Liberty Group supported the event by distributing hockey shoes and bags to the players.A total of 12 teams from 10 districts across the Kashmir valley participated in this league-based tournament, which is now in its second edition. The competition featured 12 league matches and two semi-finals leading up to the final match. Ramandeep from Baramula was awarded the ‘Man of the Match’ medal for his exceptional performance in the final. Muneer from Shopian received the ‘Best Goalkeeper’ award for his solid defense, while Kamal from Chinar Strikers was named ‘Player of the Tournament’ for his outstanding performance throughout the event.To promote women’s hockey in the Kashmir valley, an exhibition match between Baramula and Srinagar was held before the final match.The GOC Chinar Corps was the Chief Guest for the final match, accompanied by the GOC 31 Sub Area. Padma Shri awardee and former Indian hockey team captain, Shri Pargat Singh, was a special guest for the final.
