Srinagar, Aug 2: The major roads that were blocked due to landslides caused due to flash floods after cloudbursts at over a dozen of places in Kargil in Ladakh region last evening have been restored. However, work on restoration of Srinagar-Leh National Highway is going on.
Deputy Commissioner Kargil, Fida Hussain told Excelsior that cloudbursts struck at around a dozen of places in Kargil district last evening and the district administration averted a major tragedy by declaring an a alert especially in the vulnerable areas.
The DC said that police and local administration immediately swung into action in the district to rescue the people. He said that police rescued 9 people when they were caught in flash floods.
Hussain said that Kargil-Leh highway has been restored as the mud slides were cleared by using the clearance machines and the work to restore Srinagar-Kargil highway near Drass is going on. He said that the highway was blocked at several places due to the landslides caused by flash floods.
“The work on the restoration of Sanku road is going on and the road clearance may take time here as there are huge slides at 5-6 places”, said the DC adding that clearance machines are at work.
The DC said that minor damage was caused to large number of houses in the district but there was no loss of life. “A committee has been formed that will assess the loss”, the DC said.
On reports about a Santro car being washed away in Sanku river, the DC said that it is not confirmed yet. He said that since the flow of river is very fast and it enters Pakistan a kilometre away from Kargil. “Once we get some confirmation we will try to find out but so far police is investigating”, he added.
It may be mentioned here that at least one person was injured and around one dozen who were trapped in flash floods in Kargil town in Ladakh division last evening after cloudbursts hit many areas.
At around 8 p.m. due to cloudbursts at many places, water level of the streams flowing through Kargil rose suddenly with water entering the houses in the township and inundating them.
The main areas that were affected by the flash floods due to cloudburst in Kargil are Main town, Hospital Road, Adulgund, Iqbal bridge and Chanchik Nalla.
Around 2 feet silt had accumulated in Kargil town, 7-8 feet in Hinderman and 5-6 feet in Titichimik.
The DC said that clearance work on the roads was started last night only.
