Make roads secure

Sir,
This has reference to the news item ‘2 wrestlers killed’ DE July 2.
The death of two local wrestlers in a road accident in Udhampur district is a great loss to the families of the deceased, and the State. The State has lost two athletes, who could have brought laurels to State.
The road accident once again highlights the fact that our roads are becoming quite unsafe with each passing day. Everybody on the wheels remain in a hurry, caring least for pedestrians, or any one coming near the vehicle.
The people have turned insensitive towards the fellow beings. It is this insensitivity that is to a great extent responsible for road accidents.
The other causes are the dilapidated conditions of roads particularly in hilly areas of the State. The roads in Doda district are quite notorious of accidents. These roads have consumed so may precious lives, and rendered many people incapatiated for life.
The problem of insufficient transport service is another important cause of accidents in this area. As transport is disproportionate to needs of people, it results in over-loading. Overloading results in most of these accidents. Unless a holistic approach is adopted, the road accidents may continue to occur.
Yours etc….
Sumit Mahajan
