SRINAGAR, May 20: N.N. Vohra, Governor, chaired a lecture delivered by Prof. K.C. Suri on “Changing Meanings of Development & Welfare in Contemporary Political Discourse” which was organized by the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of Kashmir Studies (UMIKS), University of Kashmir, here today.
Thanking Prof. Suri for travelling all the way from Hyderabad to speak at the Institute on a very relevant subject the Governor advised Prof. Gull Wani, Director UMIKS, to seek Prof Suri’s help and organize a workshop on an identified current issue as this would benefit the SAARC scholars who are studying at the Institute. He said that serious debates and discussions on current problems will help in finding sustainable solutions and laying strong foundations for a better tomorrow.
The Governor observed that whatever be the economic policies adopted for economic growth and development, the final outcome would be adversely affected if there is lack of honesty of purpose and the administrative apparatus will fail to deliver targets. He said that the success of the first Green Revolution and the strong foundations laid in the first decades after Independence through the establishment of the Planning Commission, IITs, IIMs, Atomic and Space Programmes and a network of Science Research Institutions had taken the country forward to achieve successes on many fronts and enabled India to be counted in the comity of nations.
The Governor said that the chapters on Fundamental Rights and the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Constitution of India provide the basis for the growth and development of India as a welfare State.
The Governor said that, as elsewhere in the country, the J&K Government was also seriously engaged in dealing with the serious challenges of growth and development and facing a gigantic task of ensuring the welfare of the masses by providing adequate power, good roads, agricultural and industrial advancement and, most importantly, employment generation to enable the youth to be gainfully engaged.
Prof. Suri spoke at length on the emergence of the evolving political philosophies in our country and the present day challenges before the government for  securing development and the welfare of its masses.
The welcome address and the vote of thanks, on the occasion, were presented by Prof Gull Wani, Director UMIKS, and Dr. Humira Showkat, Research Fellow, UMIKS.
Prof. Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, Vice- Chancellor, University of Kashmir, Prof. M.A. Wani, Dean Academic Affairs, University of Kashmir, faculty members, scholars from different SAARC  countries, and students were present on the occasion.
