JAMMU, Sept 26: In ‘Meet the Director’ series held as part of the ongoing Natya Samagama, organized by Sangeet Natak Akademy, New Delhi & J&K Cultural Academy, the speakers drew focus on the methodology of the training of actors and theatre music, at the K L Saigal Hall, here today.
Anjana Puri, speaking on the production of Sidhi dar Sidhi urf Tukke pe Tukka, by Rang Vidushak, Bhopal said that the group formed by Bansi Kaul in 1984, has been a pioneer in creating a methodology for the training of actors. With the emphasis on the Vidushak style, an amalgam of gaayan, vadan and nritya and acrobatics informs the training program. Further with a belief that even in situations of continued social oppression, one finds time for the smile, fun, and frolic, the entire form of the play Tukke Pe Tukka is musical. She said that learning of music is a must for actors.
The interaction with Sanchaitya Bhattacharjee and Anubha Fatepuria, the two women actors of ‘Yahan’ by rik & Padatik, Kolkata, provided an insight into the production process of the play which mesmerized the Jammu audience last evening.
Sanchaitya Bhattacharjee shared how Vinay Sharma, the writer, and director, never gave them the script in one go, but as unnumbered single page after page. They said, the piecemeal approach has been similar to the carving a stone block, wherein with each chipping, the intended image starts revealing itself.
The actors said that absence of the director during rehearsals have had uniquely empowered them. Regarding the importance of the light and sound design in the play, they said these acted as co-actors Theatre is one of the toughest art forms, the actors candidly admitted.
