NEW DELHI: The BJP on Friday mocked at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for showing keen interest to religious practices and visits to temples and sought to remind him that mere “darshan” cannot fetch votes.
“Rahulji prabhu ke darshan se vote nahi milta, vote milta hae kaam se (You don’t get votes by mere visits to temples but it is sheer work that fetches you votes),” BJP leader and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.
Referring to Congress Vice President’s frequent visits to temples during campaign in Gujarat, he said such gestures on the part of Mr Gandhi are “curious”.
“In many places, we are told, he is being tutored by local Congress leaders on how to conduct Aarti,” Mr Prasad said. He said the Congress party which is now talking a lot about developmental issues in Gujarat should remember that in the past the Congress-led UPA had done “everything possible” to delay clearance of Sardar Sarovar Dam.
“The Congress leadership had deprived water to three states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. This I can tell from personal experience as well because I appeared in few cases,” he said.
Slamming Congress leaders for making “uncalled for” comments on the Election Commission for not announcing poll dates for Gujarat but had done so for Himachal Pradesh, he said even in 2007 and 2012 — calendar for poll dates for Himachal Pradesh and the western state Gujarat were different.
In 2007, Mr Prasad said elections were held in Himachal Pradesh on October 28 while in Gujarat it was held on November 21. Similarly, he said, in 2012 Himachal Pradesh went to polls on October 10 and in Gujarat polls were held on November 17 onward.
“Let us fight properly in Gujarat based on issues,” said the Law Minister and said “reflections on constitutional bodies like Election Commission and even at times on judiciary are uncalled for”. (AGENCIES)
