POONCH, June 12: Former minister and veteran Congress leader GM Mir Poonchi passed away after prolonged illness today.
He was 81 and is survived by two sons, two daughters and grandchildren.
Mir Poonchi, a seven time MLA and one time MP was a most popular leader of the Poonch-Rajouri belt of his time. He was not keeping well for the last several years. Mir was in Jammu for the last one and half month and was undergoing treatment. He breathed his last at his Jammu residence at around 7.30 AM today, family sources said.
Later, his body was taken to his home town Poonch. A large number of relatives, his friends and people of the area besides congress workers were waiting at his residence when the body arrived at around 4 pm in Poonch. A large number of people from all walks of life attended his funeral at 6 pm. He was uncle (Chacha) of Dy Chairman of the State Legislative Council, Jehangir Hussain Mir.
Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, has expressed grief over the sad demise of veteran Congress leader and former MP, Mir Ghulam Mohammad Mir Poonchi, early this morning.
In his condolence message, Mufti Sayeed paid rich tributes to the deceased and described him as a visionary leader who always worked for up-liftment of weaker sections of society.
The Chief Minister conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved family and prayed for peace to the departed soul.
A condolence meeting on the sad demise of veteran Congress leader G M Mir Poonchi was held at Congress Party headquarters Srinagar today.
