Modified oil tanker seized for bovine smuggling, 20 animals rescued

JAMMU, Oct 20: Jammu and Kashmir Police in Jandrah area claimed today they have seized a modified oil tanker used in bovine smuggling and rescued 7 animals from the vehicle.
A police official said that an oil tanker (JK03B-1844) was intercepted for checking at Jandrah.
He said on seeing the police, the driver of the vehicle fled away from the spot, leaving his vehicle abandoned.
During search of the oil tanker, he said, seven animals crammed inside a specially created cavity inside the vehicle in a cruel manner were rescued.
The police official didn’t rule out the use of the vehicle for other illegal activities.
He said a case FIR number 234/2024 under section 223 BNS, 11 PC Act 96/146 MV Act has been registered against the unidentified smugglers at Police Station Jhajjar Kotli and further investigation has been taken up.
Meanwhile, Police today foiled an other attempt to smuggle bovines in the jurisdiction of Police Station Ghagwal. 13 cattle were rescued, and the vehicle used for illegal transportation was also seized.
The operation was carried out by a police team led by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Ghagwal, during a vehicle-checking drive at NHW Naka Tapyal. The team intercepted a truck, bearing registration number HR38U-6789, coming from Kathua. Upon inspection, they found 13 bovines tied in a cruel manner, being transported without any valid permissions.
The rescued cattle have been shifted to a safer location. A case has been registered under FIR Number 141/2024 under Section 223 of the Bovine Nuisance Act and Section 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act. The investigation into the matter is ongoing.
