Mufti assures speedy trial in domestic violence cases

Srinagar, Oct 8: Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed today asked the police to focus on violence against women cases. He described it as a matter of serious concern and assured speedy trial in all such cases so that people responsible for such heinous crimes get maximum punishment.
Mufti was speaking in the State Legislative Assembly on a Calling Attention Notice, moved by Khanyar MLA, Ali Mohammad Sagar said: “Police is focusing on the other side and not on the crime. It (crime against woman) is a matter of serious concern. But I assure speedy trial in all such cases so that people responsible for such heinous crimes get maximum punishment prescribed under the law,” he said.
Chief Minister directed the police to fast-track investigation in cases related to violence against women so that the guilty are brought to justice. He said to prevent such incidents in future, the women will have to come forward and report the matter to the Police so that perpetrators of such crimes are booked and brought to justice.
“The police will have to take effective steps for instilling confidence among people in the law-enforcement agencies,” he said.
Referring to the case of a woman in Khanyar, the Chief Minister assured the House of a speedy trial so as to hand out exemplary punishment to those found guilty of burning her.
Minister for Horticulture, Hajj and Auqaf, Abdul Rehman Veeri in a reply to Sagar’s calling attention notice said that the government has initiated immediate action in the domestic violence case.
“Police have acted promptly on the case and launched investigation into it,” Veeri informed the House.
The Minister said that FIR No 63/2015 under Section 309 RPC was registered and investigation was initiated. The Minister said that the accused has been arrested and are presently on police remand.
NC leader, Ali Mohammad Sagar in his reply said that opposition will come forward to help Government to curb the rising domestic violence cases in the State.
“We assure the Government that we will help you and support you in curbing the rising domestic violence cases in the State. This is a very serious matter and should be stopped at a positive note,” Sagar said.
The NC leader said that no one could afford to play politics on this crucial issue. “How can we allow people to play politics on this crucial issue? We assure the Government that we will be with you to curb this menace,” he said. He said that civil society members and NGOs have expressed their resentment over the rising domestic violence cases across the State and especially the Khanyar incident has shocked the society.
Meanwhile, concerned over the condition of the border roads, the Chief Minister said he will take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Surface Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari.
peaking on Calling Attention Notice moved by MLA Gool-Arnas, Ajaz Ahmad Khan, in the Legislative Assembly, Chief Minister said he will take up with the Centre the issue of maintenance of all strategic roads by Border Roads Organisation (BRO). “The BRO and GREF have the necessary wherewithal to maintain all critical roads in the State,” he added.
Mufti mentioned Ramban-Rajouri, Srinagar-Kangan, Srinagar-Leh, Kishtwar-Sinthan and Bani-Basohli-Bhaderwah roads, which BRO should maintain so that dependable inter and intra-regional connectivity is provided to the remote and inaccessible areas of the State. “If need be, I will even take up the matter with the Prime Minister to resolve the issue on priority,” he assured.
The Chief Minister also asked Minister for Public Works to take up the issue forcefully with the Surface Transport Ministry so that all strategic roads in the State are properly maintained on a sustained basis.
While answering to the Calling Attention Notice of the Khan, Minister for R&B, Syed Altaf Bukhari said that road from Ramban to Budhal is under maintenance control of Project Sampark.
Bukhari said that resurfacing work with seal coat for a length of 23.84 km is under progress. He said that so far six kilometer surfacing has already been done.
The Minister said that Reasi-Arnas-Mahore road is being constructed to National Highway double specification. He said that the surface work of first 10 kilometers has been completed and for 21 kilometers 90 percent formation works have been completed.
Bukhari said that Katra to Mahore road has been taken over by the R&B from BRO for its upgradation and maintainance in May this year. He said that so far 14 kilometers black topping has been completed.
