Indian Davis Cupper Saketh Myneni shocked top seed and world number 85 Ricardas Berankis in the first round of the ATP Challenger tournament while Somdev Devvarman got the better of Yuki Bhambri, here today.
Unseeded Myneni knocked out his opponent from Lithuania 7-6 (1) 1-6 6-3 in his opening round while Somdev overcame a sluggish start to beat Yuki 2-6 6-4 6-3 in a marathon first round contest, which lasted two hours and 19 minutes.
Ramkumar Ramanathan and Sanam Singh are also in the fray in the singles draw.
Ramkumar is up against Chinese qualifier Yan Bai while wild card Sanam is facing Indonesia’s Christopher Rungkat.
Meanwhile, India’s Divij Sharan and Germany’s Frank Moser, seeded second, beat the Chinese-Japanese combo of Liang-Chi Huang and Yuichi Sugita 7-5 6-1 to make it to the doubles quarterfinals. (PTI)
