National Statistics Day celebrated

JAMMU, June 29: Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) today celebrated 13th National Statistics Day.
With this year’s theme “Sustainable Development Goals”, the Day was celebrated in order to create awareness among establishments and the people, especially the younger generation about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation. Every year the theme of Statistics Day is decided on focused attention.
Speaking on the occasion, Director General, Economics and statistics, A K Gandotra said that National Statistics Day is celebrated to mark birth anniversary of Prof PC Mahalanobis for his significant role in the study of socio- economic contours of India which has been extremely useful till date for the Government in taking decisions regarding the policies having direct impact on the country’s population.
Asserting that the road to improvement is never ending, Gandotra requested the officers/officials to take a pledge to regain the past glory of the department and to take ‘sustainable development goals’ to the next level. Director General, CSS/BADP, Tariq Ahmed Khan; Director General, PFD, Shahzada Bilal; Ex-Director General, Economics and Statistics, GA Qureshi; Ex-Director General, Economics and Statistics, RA Banday, Ex-Director, Economics and Statistics MY Sheikh also spoke on the occasion.
Regional Directorate of Evaluation and Statistics, Jammu also organized a function to celebrate National Statistics Day. During the programme, the tribute was paid to late Prof PC Mahalanobis. Rajni Charak, regional Director, Evaluation & Statistics, Jammu in her welcome address, highlighted the role of Mahalanobis in the field of Statistics.
Among others present on the occasion were Ashu Gupta (Joint Director, STS Jammu), Sunita Kanchan (Joint Director, Survey, DES), CPOs and DESOs of various districts, besides Deputy Directors and Assistant Directors of RD, DES and STS. Minakshi Sharma, Statistical Officer, Regional Directorate, managed the stage while Anoop Luthra, Assistant Director, Regional Directorate, presented vote of thanks.
NSO Regional Office, Jammu also celebrated Statistics Day. on 29th of June 2019 at Hotel Country Inn, Bahu Plaza (Old Jehlum Resort) Jammu. A function was organized in this connection at a hotel in Jammu and inaugurated by lightning of lamp and paying flower tributes to late Prof PC Mahalanobis by Kishore Kumar, Deputy Director General, Navdeep Singh, Deputy Director. Officers from Regional Office, NSO (FOD) Jammu, Sub Regional Office, Udhampur, officers of Directorate of Economics and Statistics, Associate Professor and some Research Scholars of Department of Statistics, University of Jammu also participated in the function.
Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Director General, NSO (FOD) threw light on life sketch of Prof PC Mahalanobis. He spoke about the importance of “Sustainable Development Goals” in the economic development of our country and appealed to the general masses to extend full cooperation to the field functionary of NSO (FOD). Sh. Navdeep Singh, Deputy Director, NSO (FOD), Government of India, Jammu also spoke on the topic.
