JAMMU, Jan 20: Governor N N Vohra today directed his Principal Secretary Navin K Choudhary to officiate as the Vice-Chancellor of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU) as the incumbent Prof R N K Bamezai is relinquishing the charge tomorrow on completion of his three year tenure.
Prof M L Garg from the School of Computer Sciences and Engineering in SMVDU, who was re-employed by the varsity around six month back, will function as Coordinator to help the officiating VC in dealing with Academic issues till the new Vice Chancellor takes over.
Pertinent to mention here that Governor N N Vohra, who is also Chancellor of SMVDU, has already constituted a Search Committee to recommend a panel of candidates for the selection of a suitable successor of Prof Bamezai.
According to the sources, 30 aspirants had applied for the post of Vice-Chancellor and four of them were shortlisted by the Search Committee, headed by Dr S S Bloeria, VC of Central University Jammu. After interviews and other formalities, the name of Prof R C Sobti, VC of DAV University, was reportedly finalized for the top post but he refused to assume the new responsibility owing to certain reasons, sources added.
However, a Raj Bhawan spokesman maintained that the selection process is at an advanced stage and the new Vice-Chancellor of SMVDU is likely to take over shortly.
Meanwhile, Prof R N K Bamezai, who is returning to Jawaharlal Nehru University from where he had come on deputation, was accorded a warm send by the faculty and other staff members of SMVDU today.
Speakers, on the occasion, lauded the achievements and initiatives taken by Prof Bamezai as Vice-Chancellor of SMVDU. They termed the outgoing VC as a visionary who run the varsity in the best professional manner.
Prof Bamezai, in his address, expressed satisfaction over his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor and hoped that his initiatives for betterment of the institution and its stakeholders would be continued by his successors. He also thanked all the faculty members, staff and others for their cooperation to him in running the affairs of SMVDU for three years.
Before his appointment as VC SMVDU, Prof Bamezai was working as the Professor of Genetics and Director, National, National Centre Centre of Applied Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
