JAMMU, Feb 5: National Democratic Party Indian (NDPI) has urged the Lieutenant Governor Girish Chandra Murmu to exempt alcoholic beverages from excise duty in J&K.
“As our Union Territory is on the pattern of Puducherry but we are not getting the same benefits like Puducherry, where alcoholic beverages have been exempted from GST,” Rajesh Gupta, president of NDPI J&K unit said and appealed the LG to exempt the excise duty from alcoholic beverages in J&K.
Rajesh further added while the Centre had proposed to impose a tax of 28% on liquor products under GST, states and Union territories, which had imposed more than 40% tax on liquor products, were reluctant to lower their taxes on liquor.
“Despite the status quo on alcohol rates, the cost of production of alcoholic beverages in Puducherry under GST is, however, estimated to go up by 5% as the cost of most of the raw materials like spirit, flavours, bottles, caps and special labels will escalate under GST,” The NDPI president said.
