Srinagar, Oct 16: A major admission scam has surfaced in Gandhi Memorial College in Srinagar where several students have been duped in the name of college admission even as it has now come to the fore that they are nowhere on the college rolls.
Excelsior has come to know that a need-based employee has duped over 50 students in the name of admission and has even taken money amounting to lakhs as admission fee from them.
In this regard, a number of students expressed their anger outside the Gandhi Memorial College and urged the college administration to act against the fraudster, while fingers are raised over the callous attitude of the students as well.
The students said that they approached the college in March for admission where they met the concerned person who assured them that he will secure their admission and asked them to pay the money in cash.
One of the students who has paid the concerned person Rs 8000/- said that he paid him Rs 4000/- in cash and transferred the rest through a mobile banking app. He said that when the students learned that the colleges have been reopened, the concerned person told that the college has not reopened yet, in a bid to mislead us, the students said.
They said that after coming to know that the exams were being held at the college, they approached the college and came to know to their surprise that they are not even on the rolls.
Left with nowhere to go, the students complained to the concerned police station which then approached the college administration and informed them about the same, however, the college has maintained that they do not have a role in the matter.
The Principal of the College, Prof. Asmat told Excelsior that the concerned person has been arrested and the investigation has been set into motion by the police. She said that the college is not in the know-how of the issue at all.
“The admissions have taken place in March and since then, these students were nowhere since then, and when they came to us we checked our records, but could not find them anywhere; the students also have a role in this, they did not approach the college at the time of the admission, which is done ideally, and they were even ready to pay him more for securing the admission-proofs are lying with the police,” she said.
When asked what about the students who have been duped by the concerned person, she said the college administration has asked the students facing the issue to submit an application and the same will be forwarded to the Kashmir University for further action.
